Happy 4th of July! Plus a Safety Reminder

The Maher Law Firm would like to wish everyone a very Happy 4th of July full of quality family time, reflection about this beautiful country we live in, fireworks and tons of delicious barbecue.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to talk about holiday safety. While most people are focused on the obvious dangers of fireworks on 4th of July, unfortunately a lot of people overlook something just as dangerous—barbecue grills. Over the years, the Maher Law Firm has seen the horrific effects of grills that have not been properly installed, maintained and/or ventilated.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, July is peak season for dangerous grill fires. From 2013 to 2017, fire fighters responded to more than 10,000 home fires involving grills, causing an annual average of 10 deaths, 160 injuries and $123 million in property damage.

Our clients describe their pain and suffering caused by second and third degree burns as unfathomable. Please don't let this happen to you and follow the NFPA's Grilling Safety Tips, which we've included here for your reference.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency:

GRILLING BY THE NUMBERS, according to the NFPA:

  • July is the peak month for grill fires. Roughly 17 percent of grill fires for the year happen in July.
  • From 2013 to 2017, an average of 19,000 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills.
  • Children under 5 years old accounted for an average of 2,000 or 38%, of the contact-type burns per year. These burns typically occurred when someone, often a child, bumped into, touched or fell on the grill, grill part or hot coals.
  • Gas grills were involved in an average of 8,700 home fires per year, including 3,600 structure fires and 5,100 outdoor fires annually. Leaks or breaks were primarily a problem with gas grills. Eleven percent of gas grill structure fires and 23% of outside gas grill fires were caused by leaks or breaks.
