Open-Heart Surgery Patients are at Risk
If you have recently undergone open-heart surgery with the use of a Stockert 3T heater-cooler device, you may be at risk. Between 2010 and 2015 the FDA received 32 reports of patient infections associated with heater-cooler devices, and multiple hospitals have since reported patients with mycobacterium chimaera infections following cardiac surgery.
Our Florida product liability attorneys want to help you. If you or a loved one has recently developed a mycobacterium chimaera infection after undergoing a cardiac surgery with the use of a Stockert heater-cooler device, you have the right to pursue compensation. Contact the The Maher Law Firm and let us assess your situation to determine if you have a defective medical device case.
What is a Stockert 3T Heater-Cooler Device?
Heater-cooler devices are essential in most cardiac surgeries because they keep the patient’s blood and organs at a specific temperature during the procedure. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 60% of all U.S. heart bypass procedures use the Stockert 3T heater-cooler devices.
What are the Symptoms of Infection?
The CDC says heart surgery patients should be on the lookout for any normal signs of infection. The mycobacterium chimaera infection is not typically found in humans, so your doctor should be able to tell you if your infection was likely caused by the Stockert 3T. Some patients have become seriously ill and others have died due to infection. See your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms after your surgery.
- Night sweats
- Muscle aches
- Weight loss
- Unexplained fever
