Dan Cotter serves as Of Counsel to The Maher Law Firm and assists the firm's attorneys from time to time in the investigation and prosecution of certain cases. Over the years, Dan has developed a wide variety of experience representing clients in the following areas: medical malpractice, wrongful death, serious injury, nursing home neglect and abuse, neglect and abuse of the developmentally disabled, school abuse, premises liability, automobile negligence, dental malpractice, and other miscellaneous negligence based actions.
Dan has tried numerous jury, bench, and arbitration trials in various state and federal courts, and has also participated in some appeals before various state and federal appellate courts. Today, Dan focuses his practice predominantly on representation of victims of wrongful death, serious injury, medical malpractice, and nursing home abuse and neglect. He has also represented the developmentally disabled in school and institutional neglect and abuse cases.
Dan has been involved in civil litigation for nearly 33 years as a Trial Attorney in private practice (1985-1990) (2000-present), and with the St. Paul Insurance Companies as a Trial / Managing Attorney (1990-1997), Regional Managing Attorney (1995-1996), and Regional Medical Claim Manager (1997-2000). Dan's experience on the defense side and in the insurance industry provides him with a keen understanding of the interworking of insurance companies.
A trained mediator and arbitrator, Dan served at one time as a volunteer Neutral Case Evaluator for the Fairfax County (Virginia) Circuit Court. Dan was a recipient of an American Bar Association Liberty Bell Award in 2005 for his long standing community service working to educate middle school students about the American Legal System.
