$2.3 million Awarded to Victim of Electric Shock

Injuries often occur in the workplace because of defective products. In one significant products liability case, a worker was required to work near energized equipment that was unguarded. He was told to be careful. The South Florida utility de-energized only half of the substation in order to provide uninterrupted service to its customers.

The plaintiff received a severe shock when he accidentally came into contact with equipment energized with 23,000 volts of electricity. He fell 25 feet to the ground, suffering thermal burns over 60% of his body. He required numerous surgeries, skin grafts, and fusions and has suffered permanent disfigurement as a result. The victim was disabled for 18 months and underwent extensive physical and occupational therapy before eventually returning to his job. The Maher Law Firm partners David Guiley and Michael Maher obtained a $2.3 million verdict for their client.

Product Liability

Defective or dangerous products are costly. They cost thousands of people their lives or quality of life every year. Death or serious injury can result from even everyday products that are defective in their design or manufacturing, or where product marketing, improper labeling, insufficient instructions, or inadequate safety warnings make them unreasonably dangerous to use.

The Maher Law Firm believes that consumers have a right to be safe and that product manufacturers, distributors, and sellers should be held accountable for the harm unsafe products cause. To each representation that our firm accepts, we commit our considerable professional, investigative, and financial resources to the challenge of proving that the defective product was unreasonably dangerous and that the defect caused the injury or death.

We have the experience to help. Among other significant matters, our firm’s founder, Michael Maher, chaired the team of 11 product liability firms that represented the state of Florida in its settlement of product liability claims against the tobacco industry. Our product liability team has assisted hundreds of individuals and families in recovering their just compensation for serious injury or death caused by defective products, including a number of multimillion-dollar settlements. For instance, our team recently helped the four adult children of a 66-year-old emphysema sufferer reach a favorable, confidential settlement of their wrongful death claim arising out of their father’s use of a defective medical oxygen bottle.
