Merck & Co. is presenting a data analysis and safety profile from Januvia
clinical trials at this week’s NIDDK-NCI (National Institute Of
Diabetes And Digestive And Kidney Diseases) workshop.
The type two diabetes medications under investigation are Januvia, Byetta,
and Victoza. These medications are known as “Incretin Mimetics”.
Incretins are a group of gastrointestinal hormones that cause an increase
in the amount of insulin released from the beta cells of the islets of
Langerhans after eating, and before blood glucose levels become elevated.
Memetics simply means mimicry. Memetics work by mimicking the incretin
hormones that the body usually produces to stimulate the release of insulin
in response to a meal.
Januvia, is supporting the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA)
decision for an independent safety review on several diabetes treatments,
including Januvia (Sitagliptin). Merck & Co., also announced they
would support the NIDDK-NCI and the NCI (National Cancer Institute) in
conducting studies on pancreatitis, diabetes, and pancreatic cancer.
The manufacturers of the type two diabetes drug Byetta (exenatide injection),
AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb, support the independent review as
well. Byetta and Victoza (a type two diabetes drug manufactured by Nova
Nordisk) are among the incretin mimetics being considered at the NIDDK-NCI workshop.
The FDA began a probe in March based on a medical journal study that found
incretin mimetics, may lead to an increased risk of pancreatitis and precancerous
cellular changes known as pancreatic duct metaplasia. “Considered
as a group, these data provide a signal for pancreatic cancer substantial
enough to warrant further investigation.” said the ISMP (Institute
for Safe Medication Practices)
